I have a '44 2N, and the hitch will not move up or down. Originally the hitch was in the up position. When I put a back blade on it, the lift arms slowly dropped down. I can lift the arms all the way up by hand, there is no pressure on them. Is this right? Also, I noticed that the hydraulic fluid is about 1/2 inch over the full mark on the dipstick, will this cause any problems?

Is the repair of the 3 point hitch something that is better left to the "professionals", or can most people do it themselves?

Can anyone recommend someone in the Minneapolis, Minnesota area that can repair the 3 pt hitches?

Thank you for any advice,

Joel B.

Joel-
Like Ed and Roper say, make sure your PTO is engaged and try it before worrying about a "fix;" I remember clearly when my grandfather traded his team of horses for a 2N and he had a hard time remembering that he had to engage the PTO to get the lift arms to raise; even called the dealer and demanded that he take the tractor back and fix it; my grandmother made a little "reminder" sign for him and that settled the issue. Hope that this is all you have to do.

the three point hitch is a gravity down system so yes, you should be able to lift them up.

and make sure you have the clutch engaged when you move the lever on the left side of the transmission backward. That starts the pto which runs the hydraulics that lift the arms - with the clutch out that is.

Thanks for the reply, Ed. The tractor was my dad's. The PTO is engaged and the clutch is out. I welcome any other ideas you might have.

Thanks,

Joel

joel, it sounds like you just purchased your tractor? there is a lever on the left side of trans case that is to engage the pto. it has to be engaged and the clutch out for the hyd lift to work. hope this helps.
