From the persective of make best use of what you have!!!

47 2N motor with front mount dist.

1. The slot in the front end of the cam which the dist shaft tang fits into to drive the dist on my motor is worn to look a little like wings. The outside edge of the slot is worn on both clockwise edges about (I'm estimating here) 1/32 to 1/16 of an inch. With the dist inplace the shaft will freely rotate back and forth about 5 - 8 degrees (again my estimate). My question is two fold. 1.)Is there any way to fix this besides replacing the cam? 2.) And if a person is to assume that when the engine is running the dist tang will always be forced against the clockwise edge (the cam is rotating counterclockwise), can I just correct the timing adjustment in para 87 of the FO-4 manual to something less than 1/4 inch and run it for another 54 years? (:>:>:>)

Second topic is the relationship of dwell to point gap. If I want to increase the dwell - do I increase or decrease the point gap?

Thanks for your help, JJ

JJ, The wear/slop is most likely due to end play and the tang is not meshing fully. A shim under
the front bearing/bushing may help.

The front mount does not have the traditional "LOBE", so dwell is not adjustable. The dwell is pre-determined by the "high" FLAT and the transition between flats is about 2 degrees. The GAP is .015 period
