Getting ready to put the lift cover back together again on the 8N, after a thorough cleaning, and replacement of the ram piston with the newer NAA type. Was wondering if I should use any lubrication on the splined lift shaft and two bushings it rides on. When I took it apart the whole shaft was covered with goop which may have been grease or maybe just the oily mud that was in the case. At any rate it got me thinking maybe this should be lubricated with something. Couldn't find anything on lubricating these parts in the FO-4 Manual. What do you guys do?? TIA Mike

Mike what ever you lube it with, remember that for the rocker shaft and its bushings there are several entry points for dirt, dust, etc. This extra stuff, combined with lube makes a great grinding compound! You need to try and close off all outside entry points.

I personally like to use anti-seeze on anything requiring lubrication that can't get it on its own. We use it under water in the glass industry, really stands up to everything I try it on. Hope this helps, Paul

I found that the area under the lift cover had the most wear due to corrosion and lack of lubrication of any area of the whole tractor. The bushings and rock shaft were dry, rusty and severely worn. All the linkage pivots related to position and draft control appeared to never have seen the oil at all. As a result I reassembled everything with the best grease I could find. I used Molybdenum Disulfide EP grease. I am sure you will get other responses from people who have been into n's longer than I have, but that is my thoughts on that subject.
