When I restoreed my 2N I was faced with a similar dilemma. I have a mint hood but it has rust in the little folds. (too much for just Bondo) Body shop wanted a donor hood (that I didn't have) + 10 hrs labor to fix (at 40$/hr) My parts chic at Ford NH said she could find a "nice" used hood for 200. I ordered one specifing original with NO RUST. When it came it was exactly like I wanted. No rust and really mint condition, AND it was correct for a 2N. (no script, no little air cleaner door) But when I got home I discovered it was a reproduction. (judging from the condition it was 20yrs old) Good deal? No the fit is every bit as bad as you have heard (check archives). I will soon need to remove it and spend the $ to cut it up and patch my original hood. I at least got one that looks original but be very wary of repro hoods. I have numerous mounting bolts that won't even line up. It looks ok from 10ft away, but it ain't something to be proud of.

If it wasn't too rusty, that's the way I'd go.

I'm not aware of anyone who presently sells a "correct" hood for a '42. All of the hoods I have seen for sale lately are the 8N style with a louvered door on the right side for the air cleaner. As Claus notes, some of these are plain and some have the original-style embossed "Ford" script at additional cost.

I don't know if this is a serious-enough restoration that the hood must be right. If it is, a "correct" hood can be made from one of the non-embossed style by cutting out the louvered door location, welding in plain metal and finishing it flush. This is really body-shop-type work, but I've seen these done so good that you can't tell by looking.

llater,

The cheapest hood I have seen is around $240.00. That is about the going price from several distributors. Of course if you want the one with the Ford Script, you will have to pay around $340.00.
Nothing is cheap these days.
Happy Motoring

Ford logo wasn't on 9n hoods was it? I thought that was only on 8n.

Is that true? The Pripps book says that Ncomplete is licensed to, and does, actually emboss into the sheet metal. That's what I read here before, too. This is the first I've heard that Ncomplete doesnt actually stamp the logo!!

Also, the stick-on applique is on a Taiwan reproduction hood just like everyone else sells.
