Killing weeds/grass under fence

What should be used to kill a 12 inch wide strip of weeds/grass under the fence line. Actually I would like to poison the ground so nothing grows in the 12 inch strip. Each side of the fence is mowed with a finish mower. There is a lot of fence and weed eating looks like a big job. A mixture of Spectraside and diesel fuel has been suggested.

Thanks.

Good GOD!!! I just happened across this forum by pure accident and was appauled by the responses to DUMP DIESEL FUEL on the ground!!! JESUS H. CHRIST! USE YOUR HEADS GENTLEMEN! If you haven't been to school since the 1950's then I suggest you re-educate yourselves. We created the EPA for a REASON - LOOK IT UP!

This may be worse than the problem, but the roots of sunflowers are supposed to give off a poison to other plants. You could plant sunflowers along the fence rows and then may not have weeds.

Much better for the enviornment. They'll eat both weeds and grass. They are also a livestock write-off!

Atrapell or Calmix pellets are soil sterilizers that can last up to five years but do leech into certain soils up to two feet away. Round Up,Round Up Transorb and Round Up Dry are great products but only work on existing foliage. Weed seeds that have not yet germinated are not going to be affected and will still grow requiring another dose of R.U. These products may only be available in Canada but I am sure there are other soil sterilizers that you can buy south of the border that will give you the results you are looking for. If you go for the Round Up, you can use Renegade instead as it does the same job for less $s. Either way, here's to less weedeatin'!

I use OUST it is a powder form you mix with water and spray. It was used on AL. roadsides for years, may be still.Use it once a year no fuel to poison the snails and mosquitos lol.

Finally a question I can answer with a measure of expertise. I am in the chemical business. Triox is a great product and will give you about two years of control. It has a nasty tendancey ti "run" in lighter soils, killing off target plants. Roundup is a great and safe total kill but only works on green, growing vegitative plants and will not give you good control of woody plants.

I suggest a Roundup / Surflan tankmix. It will give you good kill and a good residual that is dependant of rainfall. I have seen application last for up to 2 years. Surflan will not run in the soil no matter what soil type.

The active ingrediat in Roundup has recently come off patent and their are many good "generic" versions that are much cheaper than the name brand. I strongly suggest a surfactant that is a spreader sticker as and additive to the mix. One tip. Add a little Miracle Grow to the tank. This kicks the weeds into high gear and helps them take the Roundup in more efficiently.

Skip the desil fuel. Use it to start brush fires or run it in your truck. In heavy soils it will float to the top and run off, doing you no good. that is any fuel that is left after it evaporates.

Tordon is another great product but a little spendy for a fence line. It kills everything, weeds and brush.

Last I knew Tordon was a restricted herbicide that required an applicator's license. It is also persistent enough that if stock eats the foliage you don't want to use their manure for fertilizer. Know of a neighbor who killed his tomatoes with tordon cycled through his horses.

Your mileage may vary

check with a farm supply if you have one nearby, most railroad companies use a chemical which is mixed in diesel.

Dont put diesel fuel on the ground. It dont break down and goes into the ground water.

If you must use poison, try roundup or bleach.

Personally I like to use Triox instead of Roundup - works faster for me and if used full strength guarantees nothing will grow for one year - one gallon costs about 18 bucks at Wally Mart - you can dilute it, but I use it straight in the sprayer for getting the dang monster alien thistles in the ditches. Triox you will see them going brown and leaving doing down in less than one day, Round up may take several days. Jim

Dad and I use this setup with Roundup. With this type of wand, it kills an 18" swath. It takes 100 gallons of roundup to do the fence rows on the farm. That's 2 1/2 gallons of Roundup concentrate at about $130.

Neat picture. How many feet of fence will 100 gallons of Roundup do?

Good question. It takes about 5 1/2 hrs to do the job. Our farm is ~200 acres. Need that trip odometer on that proofmeter. :-)

As a kid we had about 300 acres fenced. We used goats (neutered males) with long necks. They were also fun companions !!
This won't kill the weeds but it certainly keeps the weeds & woody scrub cut back. Running them with horses also kept distemper out of the herd.
FWIW,

Instead of using round up use bleach regular household and mix 50-50 for the same results.

Roundup will give you a good one time kill. However, you comment that you would like to poison the ground. Pramitol 25E is a ground sterilant good for about 2 yrs. of no growth. It comes in liquid for spraying or pellets that break down with rain and soak in over time. I don't use it widely, just under tanks and around sheds. Cuts way down on weedeatin'.

I agree w/ the Pramitol. We used it mixed in diesel fuel(when fuel was cheap) to spray around hog houses and hog lot alleys. Quick kill and left it sterile. We could then mow with no trimming needed.

yep, Spectraside (Roundup, etc.)and diesel fuel to kill the existing weeds and then put some Treflan down on the area and they won't come back this season. Repeat next spring.

I would strongly suggest not using diesel fuel as a mix. If something should happen and the EPA gets wind of it OH BOY Katie bar the door. In our area we just had a water table contaminated; 700 homes with no water. All the chemical suggested are fine when used according to the instructions, when not used per instructions they are in violation of federal and local laws.
Just my 2 cents

Round Up is what we use In concentrate form. You will have the best results if you spray right after you trim the weeds as short as you can get them.
