ZA Transmission Problem (Need Advice before Friday)

Parked the 1950 ZA several months ago in 1st gear with clutch engaged. Transmission was working fine. Yesterday it was stuck in 1st gear. Gently rocked tractor back and forth and gently pulled the shifter out of first. Now it works fine in 3rd and 5th (the two gears on the right) or 2nd and reverse (the two left gears), but it won't go into 1st and 4th (the center gears). What is wrong and will it hurt to drive it in a parade like it is? The shift pattern is as below. John M. 2 1 5 ----- - R 4 3

I just had a similar problem on a newly purchased m5.It could not be shifted into any gear.Tractor had been idle for sometime. With the shifter removed I found all of the shifter rails to be rusted. Also all of the detent balls and springs were rusted and would not allow any movement. I removed rust everywhere.I suggest you remove and clean the balls and springs with a magnet,then thoroughly clean everything.Do not shift gears unless there is something to prevent the balls from popping up and droping into the trasmition.
