R SN. problem

Need help in IDing an R. The serial no. as much as can be made out is R 0000690. There is a long skip between the R and the start of the 0's, but don't think we are missing any no's or letters. I think this tractor may be an industrial model, it is wide front and was used as a mower tractor by a local town. It is a red nose-what years were these produced? Any help would be appreciated.

Jack,
A couple questions. Does your R have 24" rear rims? Does it have a straight front axle with an "I" beam cross section - looks sort of welded together. Does it have cast front wheel centers with 5 clamps that hold the rim to the wheel center? Does it have a foot clutch and accelerator pedal? If you answered yes to the questions above then you've got an RTI. Kevin is probably as close as anyone will come to the correct year given the serial number you listed. If you still have an ID plate on the engine, post that info and serial number. I should be able to tell you what year the engine was made. If it had a side mount sickle mower and you've still got it - keep it. There hard to find. All R models have a red nose. The RTI was the second most popular R model right behind the RTU.

Brian-I think yes to most of your questions. The tractor belongs to a neighbor so need to do more research. The engine tag is intact-need to do some scraping, will also check for more complete tractor SN. I assume that the R retained the sloping red nose thru production altho the Z etc. went to the vertical cast iron grill in the early fifties? Thanks, Jack

Jack,
The R, ZT and early U series all have the same style grill and surround. The R and ZT were the same parts but the U was larger. In the early 40's the U went to a horizontal bar sheet metal grill that was part of the radiator surrond/shell. The ZA/ZB series had a 2 piece grill with horizontal bars that wrapped around the radiator. The ZA/ZB also had cast top and bottom radiator tanks with a bolt in radiator core. The U's stayed with the horizontal sheet metal grill until the UB Specials which had cast tanks like the ZA/ZB series.

I agree with Kevin as to the year. I must be missing the 5 in the SN. I am reading 00-00690 with the missing no.(5?) being directly behind the edge of the plate behind the brake pedals. Having not seen an R since the early forties(showing my age now) I assumed that the sloping front grill had changed along with the Z to the cast iron grill. I am going to post a pic of it on the photos site. The guy wants $1200 for it, says it runs good-needs quite a bit done before even starting to clean up and paint. Brian I think what you said to look for is pretty conclusive that it is an industrial. Thanks both for your help. Jack

Jack,

Doesn't look like too bad of a tractor, I'd say it's worth the $1200. I have RTI #00500647. Your tractor should have the upgraded engine with the flat top pistons and the high compression head, either a 10A2648 or a 10A2647 and a MS TSX-497 carburetor. I'd be interested in knowing what your engine serial number is. These are a nice little tractor.

From my best guess I would say a 1952. The serial number range in that year is 00500599 to 00501000. RT series tractor where built between 1939 & 1948 which includes all versions of "r" tractors and then from 1948 to 1955 includes just rti's. I hope this helps. A person that has forgot more about "r" model tractors than I will ever know is at this web address. [email protected] He would know for sure.
