Recently had my 51 UTS Special at a show, someone said I had it wrong, its only a "U". Every thing I have found shows serial # U 01206325 as a UTS Special. Someone else wanted to know what the special meant. I have an original ops and maint. manual, plus a IT SHop manual, but no clue as to what the special means (other than only comes with heavy duty front end). Anyone have answers to above or correct/additional information?? Bob

Bob,
The UTS Special was made in 1956 and 1957 only with a gas engine and 1956 only with a diesel engine. The Specials had a flat grille similar to a GB or ZA/ZB series tractor. It was a 2 piece grille with a center strip. The Specials also had power steering available. The power steering was a cylinder in the front nose casting similar to the later 445 and 5 Stars. The UTS Special had the large wheatland wrap over fenders similar to the GB instead of the standard clamshells found on the regular/older UTS tractors.

UTS Special - gas
1956 01214126-01215100
1957 01215101-01215150

UTS Special - diesel
1956 05002105-05002404

Hope this info helps straighten out any confusion.

Brian

Bob,

Don't know what serial number lists you have been looking at but the number you show is indeed a 1951 UTS. The UTS Specials didn't come out till 1956 at serial number 01214126. A UTS Special would have a flat grill like a ZB or GB and cast radiator top and bottom tanks. Built into the lower tank would be the provision for the power steering cylinder and piston. It may or may not actually have power steering. There would also be slightly different sheet metal to accomodate these changes. If a row crop (UB Special) it would have a split pedestal. The axle and knuckles on the standard tractors are the same on a UTS Special as a later UTS. Hope this helps clear some confusion.

Jim
