I have another question I am hoping all you MM fanatics can help me with. I own and am restoring a 1951 RTE, the fenders that were on the tractor when I bought it are more rounded on the top than that of other R fenders that I have seen. could these be the right fenders? or did someone pull them off a Z or a U?

Tyler,

If your friends helped you pinpoint your late RTE as a 1951 by using the engine serial number I'm sure that's what you have. I think Brian mis-read his parts book as mine says the first RTE with the clam shell fenders was serial #0045000204 which is actually the last 1950 RTE. Your tractor undoubtedly takes the clam shell fenders, whether the ones you have are the correct ones or not you'll have to find out. I think you have a pretty good handle on what you've got. That's a pretty rare tractor, good luck with it.

Jim,
Thanks for the catch BUT I didn't read my parts book wrong. There's a misprint. I'm looking at Repair Catalog R-1086C. On page 47 it specifically states that the new clamshell fenders are used on RTE tractors 00400282 and after. But you are also correct. I went back and looked at the platform on page 70 and it contradicts by stating the old fenders were used up to RTE serial number 00400204. Do you have a later repair catalog that maybe has been corrected? Otherwise I'm to guess that they either didn't put fenders on in 1951 - extremely unlikely or that MM made a typo years ago in my level repair catalog. It sure would make explaining Tyler's tractor as a 1951 a whole lot easier if it was just a typo which now I'm thinking it is. Thanks for pointing that out I guess I should have compared the two serial number cutoffs. I would never have thought they wouldn't agree. You know just when you start to trust the old parts books for info they slap you and make a fool of you.

Humbly,
Brian

Brian,

I'm using the same parts book as you are, but you need to read a little closer. Yes, page 47 pictures the clam shell fender but on page 46 the serial number breaks are for the rear axle and housing. All the tractors went to the new axle and housing in 1952. You mention page 70 too, but it is talking about the platforms. The old platform was used up to the 204 number you mention. What you need to look at is what I looked at - page 89, where it has the new clam shell fender starting at no. 204 for the RTE. This is actually the last 1950 RTE. Makes me wonder if either the parts book or the serial list is wrong. To boil it all down, looks like M-M put a new platform on the 1951 tractors, which didn't allow for using the old straight fenders as the new platform wouldn't accept the extensions that are necessary to mount the fenders. Therefore they came out with the new clamshell fenders and continued to use them in 1952 and up on the new axles housings. I went out and set the fenders off my 1952 on both the '52 and a '48 and they fit the same, which isn't really very good, but that's just the way they are. The U bolt fits both the housings the same, which is much better than the fender. Clear as mud?

Jim,
Thanks for clearing that up. I guess I need to go back to "Reading MM Parts Books 101". I missed the fender reference on page 47 to go to page 89. Oops. Long story short, clam shell fenders on all 1951 and later R models. Axle and brake change for all 1952 and later R models.

on the serial number plate on the tractor I can make out RTE 0040-----. which would limit it to 1951, 52, 53. So I know that the tractor is an actual RTE. as for the seat and I will have to look at it again when I am home again. This sure is getting interesting.

Tyler,
The late R's had clam shell fenders. Post your tractor serial number and I'll tell you for sure if they're the original fenders. We just finished restoring our 1950 RTE. RTE's are hard to come by. Only made 1115 you know. I like the look of the adjustable wide front. Our RTE is old enough to still have the old style flat fenders. They changed them in the 1950/51 time frame.

My RTE is a 1951, so that would make the clam shaped fenders correct. I was hoping that was the case. I also have noticed that they are hard to find, I was at the WMSTR (Rollag) MM expo, and they didnt even have one on display.

Unfortunatley the serial number on my tractor was defaced almost beyond recognition. a few months back I was able to make out enough numbers to put it as either a 51, 52, or 53. Someone helped me use the engine serial numbers to determine the exact year. Thanks for the posting

Tyler,
I looked up the fenders in my parts book. Now it gets interesting. The fenders changed with the first RTE in 1952. There was one made in 1952 and 5 made in 1953. The rear axle housings, axles, and brakes also changed with the first RTE in 1952. They introduced brake discs with fine splines. The axles had fine splines where they engaged the differential also. The seat support also changed in 1952. Do you have the spring "float ride" type seat? If so, does it have a one piece mounting bracket that goes from the back of the trans case to the spring seat frame? This is the 1952 and later style. In 1951 they used an "L" shaped bracket on the trans case and a "U" shaped bracket from the "L" bracket to the spring seat frame. These 2 brackets were bolted together in front of the seat with one large bolt and spring. Prior to 1951 they used the "L" bracket and a flat steel bar to the seat. I hope this isn't too confusing. I've got a serial number list for engines also if you need to verify the year that way. It's also possible that someone put an RTE front end on a different year RTU. With out the tag it would make it difficult to pinpoint the year exactly.

RTE Serial Numbers
1947 420845-420856
1948 0044800001-0044800501
1949 0044900001-0044900315
1950 0045000001-0045000204
1951 00400205-00400281
1952 00400282 only
1953 00400283-00400287

We should be able to figure out what you've got from the details of your tractor. If you can still read some part of the serial number maybe you can match it up to these. Note that all 1948 and later RTEs started with '004' in their serial number.
