My neighbor has a Moline R that we have been working on. The pistons have quite a bit of side slap when they are in the full upward position. Can the cylinders be bored out and oversize pistons obtained or is there another solution to this problem?

I believe the R uses the same bore as a Z.The difference was in the stroke. We bored my Z's 206 .180" over with no problem. Seems to me like we used Jet Star pistons.

I just got done overhauling a R engine. we used .040 over cast iron MM pistons. with .030 under main. rods ground to .020. plenty of cylinder wall left . My factory R manual only gives .020 and .040 piston numbers.

Freddy,
Where did you get your pistons? Are they still available from AGCO? Or were they new old stock you found? How much were they? Thanks!
Brian

they were old stock. they came out of a engine someone tried to fix by a top end overhaul. the problem was the bottom end was very loose and made noise when running. so it sat that way. we paid 50 dollars for the tractor. the pistons were like new.

Yes they can at least up to 30 thousands over. I would be a little worried after that. I have heard of them being bored to 60. Finding pistons maybe a little hard though. Kevin "mushy" Moschenrose

The R's and Z's pistons are the same size bore, but they are different. The oversize for an R are .020 and .040. The difference between the Z and R pistons is the height of the wrist pin and that all but the very last R's had dome pistions. while Z's are flat top pistons.

I just tore down a R with 3.75 M&W pistons in it. The skirts on a couple of them seem to have been slapping some. I cant bore my blocks anymore but it seems like a fellow told me that a machine shop could knurl the bottoms of the pistons and help with the slapping. Just a thought. Thanks
