Yes this will work. I can also give you some tips on it and some names to call for parts if you want them. Kevin

There is an interesting article in the latest edition of Antique Power about a guy who replaced a diesel engine in a UTS with a 403. You might want to read it and decide if you want to go through all that work.

Don't know about motor in G, but a 403 power unit engine-same displacement as a U- is not exactly a bolt-in swap. Flywheel ring gear is about 1" bigger, starter is 1/2" farther from crank. This requires grinding out bellhousing to fit starter nose most times.
Don't know if G uses pilot bushing or ballbearing. 403 uses a bearing and may have to machine adapter for U pilot bushing to fit in flywheel.
On 403 Water return manifold is 2" higher (taller blocks) so use U water return manifold and rework radiator inlet somehow. If you have U diesel, can turn the inlet upside down and get reasonably good alignment. gas U's are offset and require something else. radiator can't keep 403 engine cool if you're working it for extended periods. (at least mine couldn't.) Temp guage interferes with mounting hood. U-manifolds I've seen have an extra pipe plug in the side, so it can go there.
I'm aware that you can overcome some of this using G/403 crank in U block with U starter and flywheel, but at least this gives you some idea of what you're up against.

Putting a 403 may not help you in 1st gear pulls. The 403 makes more torque. this can hurt you on a loose track. If your engine bogs down some as you begin to break traction it helps from spinning out and stoping. If you have too much torque you can spin out sooner. On a hard track a 403 would help or of you could pull 2nd or 3rd gear, but I don't see it as a big benefit in low gear pulls. If you are pulling in 6500 lb or less classes A good running 283 is hard ot snuff. I would work on weight brackets, tires/pressures and a higher drawbar, it's cheaper.
