Missing Model and Serial Plate

I recently bought a used MM tractor that was formerly used by the highway department for mowing. There is no identification plate on the right side of the gear box, but about 8 inches below the clutch on the left side there is a painted over rectangle of glue. This looks to me like the place the plate used to be. The whole tractor is painted highway department yellow on top of the original gold and red. I do have the model and serial number off the plate on the lower part of the engine block. It says Model 283E4 and Serial 10901014. This one is on propane and the tank says mfg 1937. The tractor doesn't look that old so I'm thinking it is not factory original.

Can anyone help me identify the model, approximate year of manufacture, and horsepower rating.

Thanks for the offer. This was my first LP in a long time. I didn't have a tank on site or even a tank on wheels. The delivery trucks won't go out for just a tractor fillup. I ended up buying a 12.5 gallon tank and a rig so I can fill my tractor's tank from the 12.5 gal tank. That put it just over half full, judging by the frost line on the outside. I will eventually get a stationary tank on site because I plan to build a house there in a few years. Until then, I can haul the 12.5 gallon tank around when I need a fill. The full weight of a 12.5 gallon tank is 95 lbs. and you have to turn it upside down to get the liquid propane to transfer. Once I did it right, it took only a few minutes.

Doug,
Your engine is a late 1957. If its the original engine it is probably a 5 Star tractor. Does it have a grille that looks like a cross?

Yes. The grille does look like a cross. I looked for a picture of a 5 Star in this forum and found one. The picture is dark, but it does look a lot like my tractor. Mine has the wide front end with a tubular cross bar. It looks a lot like the 335 except for size and the construction of the cross bar.

I'm so glad you could help me. I have no way of knowing if the engine is original. It looks like something was removed that mounted just ahead of the generator and behind the fan. There is no obvious sign of tampering and the ID tag has faded colors as I would expect for an original engine.

Do you also have a horse power estimate for a 5 Star on Gas/Propane?

Thank you for the information. I checked the web site you suggested. I had been there before and noted the similarity of one tractor to mine. The pictures didn't have captions, however. I didn't make the connection until today: Five stars inside a circle means 5 Star Model. Now I'm on track. There just haven't been many M-M tractors in my life. I live in Farmall country and have also driven John Deere, Ford and Oliver tractors in the past. The one I bought was only the second MM I had ever seen and I'm only up to four now (not counting pictures).
