Rear engine seal

I recently completely restored a 1960 Jetstar.This year and model uses a felt rear seal,
which was replaced, and it fit well. it now weeps oil while running and drips out when standing.
Is this normal and I should get used to it, or is there something that can be done, short of splitting it and replacing the seal again, which did not work the first time anyhow?

Perhaps the felt seal just needs time to soak some oil in and swell a bit. How long has it been in there?

If you use a lip type seal on the crankshaft designed for the felt seal, the seal will be damaged imediately due to the spiral cut in the seal surface of the crankshaft that causes the oil to be pumped back into the crankcase.

I'm sure you thought of this, but did you replace the seal on the transmission input shaft? did you pre-lube the felt seal so it wouldn't scuff or burn on initial start up?

Thanks Kelvin, every seal in the beast was replaced, and every bearing. I had oil on all wearing surfaces and even a little teflon assembly lube, it wasn't saturated but it saw some lube.

To my understanding, a felt seal has to let some oil through to lubricate. If it doesn't, it will burn the felt out. When I rebuilt my ZTU I used a rubber lip seal front & rear. They are holding fine.

Glad to hear that the new style seals are holding up, I have to put the crank back in my ztu and it had the felt but I will be using the lipped seals as well. Good to hear.

MM went to lip seals in later model years.Ihave an old JD B with felt seals that seem to work better.
