Rear end gear whine in MM model R

I recently purchased another MM R and after getting it running I notice that it has a very distinct gear whine comming from the rearend. We also own another model R that we built for pulling and that too has the same gear whine. Is this a common occurance? is there a way to fix it? I guess i never really gave it much thought until now. any advice would be great.

I've got 2 R's that whine. (to varying degrees. Wonder if they whined 40 years ago?)

You bet they whined 40 years ago, heck, that was only in 1962 and I had already logged a lot of seat time on Dad's R. They all sounded the same then and do to this day.
