What ype of oil is to be used with MM factory hydraulic system? I seem to remember that engine oil (30w?)is to be used. I would like to use the hydraulics on various implements that have 'modern' hydraulic oil in the cylinders. Obviously the 2 oil types are not compatible. Can I use a hydraulic oil in this system or is this looking for trouble because the hydraulic reservoir is vented to the engine crankcase? It appears that NOT using the factory hydraulic jack could lead to some problems (I have a jack but it is in poor condition) because the system will no longer be closed. One potential problem I see is overfilling of the reservoir when the jack is contracted and this oil would end up in the crankcase. Any thoughts? Does the reservoir need to be vented externally?

Call Welters they have a lock valve that pipes into your hydralic lines that works great. I think you can get it from a company called Northern Hydralics also. It runs about $50.

You can remove the vent from the crankcase and put a filter on it and use hydrolic oil if you wish, or you can use hydrolic oil as it is The minimal amount that may get into the crankcase won't hurt anything, we have done it for over 40 years with no problems. If the tractor hydrolic system is original you will have to use the Moline cylinder, this cylinder has two check valves in it, one under each fitting. These valves hold the cylinder in position when you let go of the control lever. Whith any other cylinder, when you raise it and let go of the lever it will drop.

Is it possible to put check valves at the ends of the hydraulic lines (i.e where the quick connectors are located on the tractor?)?? This would allow the hydraulics to be used with other cylinders.

I used to work for a company who made all-hydraulic curbforming machinery. They used that kind of check valve on the lift cylinders at each corner, so that if the line lost pressure, the machine wouldn't drop. Looks like you could plumb one anywhere between the original control valve and the cylinder. Just remember, the lines from there on to the cylinder will be under pressure.

We have run Exxon Torque Fluid 56 in Dad's ZB for as far back as I can remember. If your pump's O.K., I'm pretty sure hydraulic oil would work.

That vent line to the crankcase is really just that-a vent. Its plumbed into the crankcase so there is less likelihood of dirt getting into the hydraulic system.

On the other hand, uniharvestors just use a vent and they get along O.K.

another thought: If you have an original cylinder, I bet someone out there has the parts to fix it.
