I have a starter on a 52 UTS that keeps breaking a ring behind the bendix spring. The first time it happened I went to my friends and stole the starter off his U, brought it home and his bendix was way bigger than mine. Apparently the flywheel on mine is bigger. Anyone else had trouble wit hthese small bendix starters? were they weaker? The shaft on the bigger bendix starters are bigger as well. Why would my tractor keep breaking this ring?

BTW I really didn't steal the starter, he let me have it, his is stuck anyway.

All the U's I have seen have the 10 tooth 1.550 diameter pinion gear. But if the smaller one works with your combo it sounds like the starter drive used in a UB which is 9 tooth. Maybe someone has put a UB ring gear on your flywheel???Which ever one works with your combo take it to your local starter shop and tell them you need a "rubber compression barrel" type drive to replace your's. Get's rid of the spring and you won't have that trouble anymore. Also would be a good idea to check the timing for to much initial advance setting. If you can't get it locally drop me an e-mail can probably get it to you in a couple days.Good Luck.

Thanks for the reply. Email me with price etc of the replacement parts for the spring. I am interested. Taking the starter off and on is getting old.
I will retard the timing as well.

I also have a 1952 UTU. This model year has the same ring gear as the UB.
