Last year there was discussion on the forum concerning frequent cracks in MM heads. How serious are hairline cracks between intake and exhaust valve seats. Other fine cracks between injector port and bottom of head. The MM670 diesel shows no sign of any problems from these barely visible fissures. Will the cracks inevitably get worse to the point that they do cause problems? Should they be welded and who does that kind of work?

Thanks for helpful replies. Does anyone else have experience continuing to use heads with tiny cracks that have no obvious effect on performance? Certainly so far there is no coolant leak.

We have put some Cracked heads back on engines that we overhauled that weren't haven't any problems can't say we have had a problem but it is a risk.

Himes casting repair in Mooresville IN has a lot of experience welding MM heads. There number is 317 831 8069 good luck

My experience has been that cracks between the valve seats will eventually give you problems but the cracks from the injector bore to the surface of the head usually have little impact. The area around the injector bore is thin so it cracks easily but the water jacket is quite a ways away so usually I don't see problems there. Between the valves is a common place for Moline heads to crack and leak coolant. If you're going to work this tractor hard I'd replace the heads or get them welded. If you're just going to show it and not work it hard you could just put the heads back on. It's a risk. I'd have the heads pressure checked for leaks at the minimum.
