Just overhauled a 1951 ZA and I think the tappets are quite noisy. I have never been around a Moline before, so wondering if this is normal for this type of engine?

Did the rocker arms have a groove or a dip in them where the camshaft rubbed them? That can really make a racket. A good machine shop can reface them so the'll work like new.

The tappets are noisy on these engines. Since you just overhauled it have you gone back and re-adjusted after it has warmed up? If not this may be adding to the problem.

I agree with Joe. Check your Valve tappet clearance. They shouldn't be very loud.

I'll leave a page that has the tune up information on it.
