I read the new rules that were posted. With no increase in engine deck heigth, are 403 blocks illegal on U tractors? Or are 403's considered a replacment engine for a U?

Chuck, 403 blocks are not legal in MM U's.U and UB
tractors must use short blocks.For more information call Scott Boehler, head of the tech
committee at 217-627-3547. Or you could call
Ed Epperson the new president of NATPA at 937-

I dont see why they cant be more specific with these rules. The way I read them, 403 blocks would be legal. It only said that 800 blocks are
ilegal. If you must use the short blocks I would think that would severly limit the amount of stroke you can have. Why are the 403 blocks ilegal? Didn't I read that JDs could use the "power block" which wasn't even made by john deere?

403 blocks are illegal because they change the
deck height of the engine. U blocks have a deck
height of approximatly 11.75 inches,G blocks
have a deck height of 12.5 inches.This is same
as having a deck plate.If you are a NATPA member
you will get a flyer of some kind ASAP asking
people's opinion on this subject and possibly
several others.Please see earlier post with phone
numbers if you are not a member or cannot wait.

I am not a member because I have never been to any
NATPA pulls, But I was thinking about trying to go to some in the future. I think they should have something about it in "the hook" magazine,
like a questioner or something. I beleive they would reach more pullers that way.

Are M-5 diesel blocks legal? I ask because I believe they are the same height as a U, but the bore is 4.75. If this achieves approximately the same cubic inches as the G block, couldn't that be a way around their rules? Given the previous discussions I don't know why you would put G blocks on a U. Unfortunately I didn't see anything in the NATPA rules about the "aftermarket" G heads or did I miss that?! I have heard of Massey heads (cross-flow) being put in Olivers, rumor or true? If true, this too is not covered in the rules?

M-5 blocks are legal,as are newer blocks such as the 670. Taller blocks allow for more stroke. I
have not heard of aftermarket heads for MM engines,I am assuming you are talking about JD
heads. The rules do not prohibit these parts
specifically because they are not the threat
that other tractors do. Basically, bringing a
Deere to a Div. 3 or 4 pull is like bringing
a knife to a gunfight.While they might win, if
only rarely, they don't scare many pullers.
Yes, I know, there are good JD tractors that give
people a hard time on the local level. However
they are few and far between.(note all hate e-mail
please be sent to address above) The Massey heads you refer to (1100) are legal
in Division V only,I think. They are not legal
in Division 4 down.

This seems to be theme for every pulling org I have every seen. It seems to me that the Molines are continually penalized because the MM engineers had the ability to utilize existing tooling to produce bigger and more powerful engines that can be bolted directly to older tractors. The price of being innovative is still killing the MM's.
