Mm 445 timing

Your carb should have the idle needle on the top-back side of the carb and the load or high speed needle on the bottom of the carb. Book says to warm up engine and adjust idle needle until engine runs smoothest. To set high speed needle open up engine and turn down needle until the engine begins to lose speed, then open the needle 1/4 turn. As an initial setting I think I'd have both open about 1 1/2 to 2 turns.
To set the timing on the engine remove the small cover plate on the left rear side of the engine. Turn the engine over till you see the DC 1 mark, then put a mark (chalk or paint) 3 1/8 inch BEFORE the DC 1 mark. Run the engine at 1550 RPM and use a neon timing light to see if the mark lines up with the center of the opening. Make sure your line of sight is centered thru this opening. I guess you know enough to loosen the distributor lock nuts and turn it one way or another to adjust properly. If you have had the engine torn down or the distributor removed and need the procedure to use the breaker point method of getting an initial adjustment let me know and I'll tell you how to do it.
