hi , my first tractor is an 8n (1949) i found an MM -UTU337450 with 4 1/2 x 5 283A4 engine. its a 1948 ? what is the HP ? does it have a "live" PTO ? where can i find info on this tractor? i have a hay bailer , cycle bar mower - the 8N stalls ect - not strong enough - i can buy the MM for 800 dollars im thinking it might be a good winter project , the engine ,clutch ,tires are ok -it has set a long time with a cracked intake manifold (just replaced) any info on this model tractor ? thank you , from kentucky!

I don't know anything about your serial number. I didn't see it on the list. I do know that the UTU is a pretty tough old tractor. If it has MM's version of live pto, it will have an auxilary clutch lever sticking out of the brake housing on the lefthand side of the tractor. Since you say your tractor is a '48 it is doubtful that it will have a live pto, because it would have had to been retrofitted after manufacture.

In MM's version of the live pto, the clutch only stops the forward motion of the tractor. all the gears in the transmission continue to turn.

Yes a UTU will be more power-approx. 40hp.- than an 8n but do you really want that pto shaft spinning between your feet?
