Propane tractor

I bought a 1969 propane MM tractor and after 3000 dollars of repair work, including a new alternator, etc and many diagnostics....it does not start. I do not want to take it to the implement dealer who already has so much of my money, any suggestions?

What model? Where in the USA is the tractor?
Could be a number of things, the LP tractors have a solenoid cutoff switch to stop fuel flow when the ignition is switched off. It is a part of the fuel filter and a broken wire could make it not open; so if you have spark but no gas, give this a look. You should be able to smell propane out of the exhaust while cranking the engine.
Also note, if you have spark and fuel, every LP tractor I've been around will only start with a throttle setting just a little above idle (700-1000 RPM).

It is a G900 and I live in the center of Kansas.The trouble is that every morning the battery has been drained and so there is no spark. I replaced it and the same thing occurred. So if I charge it overnight I can start the tractor but the next day, dead again. Any ideas?

The comments below are all true. Find a different tractor mechanic. Properly wired, there shouldn't be a drain on the battery; something is removing-using electricity while the key is off that shouldn't be.

What type of trouble did you have that you had repaired? I have propane tractors and there isn't that many things that can keep them from running considering all mechanical components of the engine are in fair shape. Main thing I would check first is points, make sure the contacts are clean and properly gapped. Next make sure there is no short from the points to the chassis. I have had this happen a time or two in the insulator thru the dist housing. Take the dist cover off and turn the engine slightly by hand (with the fan or hand crank) and make sure the rotor button is rotating. Next could the timing have been left off by the "repairs" you effected? Email me with symptoms and I will try to help in any way I can.

The implement dealer said it had alternator problems and put on a new one. Then there were wiring problems and he welded some wires together so they did not touch the side of the tractor which he said was causing a short. I spent 900 on the diagnostics of the hand pump and fuel pump to determine a leak. I know nothing about motors so to everything he told me, I had to assume it was correct. Now every day the battery is dead but the tractor will start if I charge it up overnight. It seems to have no problems other than this and sounds wonderfully fit when it is running.

To find the draw, pull either battery cable, lightly touch it to the battery terminal from which it was removed, it will have a spark, maybe very small if the draw is small. Then eliminate things like the coil, dist, regulator, generator, any other connected system until you find the source of the draw. The source will be the last one you removed which caused the spark, the source will be elimated when there is no longer any spark. I've seen starter solinoids, generator which were shorted, but the tractor would still run.

If you battery is dead every morning. You will need a diode installed in one of the wires that come from the altenator to prevent the battery being drained. I had the same problem on a oliver and farmall tractors after I put altenators on them. If you send me your mailing address. I can send you one that I have made up. You can have it. I would just like to know if it solves your problem.. hope this helps

The 900 came equiped with an alternator with external voltage regulator. If the regulator is not sticking it shouldn't need the diode. If it is sticking it will run the battery down fast, however the diode could fix the problem of running battery down but it might overcharge the battery.

If the man is reputable, he will fix it. sounds like the very things you paid him to fix are still a problem (alt not charging and a short). 900 for that??? Darn. That is sad that somebody would take advantage of someone that might not know how to diagnose and fix a specific trouble on their tractor. Please get advice on these boards before you go back to that guy. There are people here that will help just because they are good people and enjoy helping. Good luck.
