MM-u is hard to get into 1st and 4th gear but seems fine in all others could this be a bent shifting fork.

It could be, or could be one of the roll pins have moved and is draging on the housing. Does it pop out of either gear when on a pull or just hard to get in gear? Do you have to hold it in to make it work? Glenn

Well,
First gear was pretty slow, so it wasn't used much on those tractors. so the shift rails, on that side, at least are likely to be gummed up. Fourth may be that way too. As I recall, Fourth was hard to find on the tractor I grew up on, so it just wasn't used much.

I have a '47 UTI that is the same way. I can find the gears the easiest right after I depress the clutch while they are still rolling. It appears to be the nature of the tractor. Since I have been using them regularly, I can find them easier than when I first got the tractor.
