U302 putting on a fireworks display

I have been helping a friend replace a frost plug on a U302. We had to take the head off and the cylinder pots and pistons out to get at the frost plug between the two cylinder pots. Now assembled we are getting strange fire from the ignition but cant get the tractor to start. The timing marks are aligned and the reassembly is correct. We get fire from each wire when the plugs are out and the tractor engine is being spun over. When we put the fire to the installed plugs we get intermittent spark, and sometimes no spark at all. Is this a sign of a bad condenser? The ignition parts show some corrosion but were cleaned and reinstalled. The tractor had run this spring. I was wondering if a weak coil or a condenser going bad would cause this strange pattern of spark. We try it and there is no spark whatsoever. We wait 5 minutes and we get spark to the plug but intermittent..strange!!!..any ideas would be appreciated. My friend uses the old girl to pull hay wagons and he wants to get started this week coming. great old tractor in excellent condition....except for the spark!!! Thanks, Mike in Exeter, Ontario

Thanks for the responses. We got the 302 running last night. We asked a tractor nut who told us that when the both valves of #4 were floating open as you rotated back and forth that#1 would be TDC. We went that route and wired from there and the 302 atarted up. We adjusted by ear and it seemed to be running fine, will put a timing light on to fine tune. Thanks fellas! Mike in Exeter Ontario

Other than the items already listed. We had a JD 60 that acted similar and it was a bad coil. If the tractor hasnt had new points, plugs, cond, cap, and rotor put new on. When my dad farmed with gas tractors in the late 50's and 60's he gave all the tractors a tune up every spring.With the tune up use the copper wires not the carbon fiber unless it has been changed to electronic ignition. And we have had real good luck with Autolite and AC spark plugs. They seem to last longer than the Champions do. Two last things to check 1- the ignition switch as we had onw that had parshaly shorted out. And 2- the springs in the Distributor that operate the advance. Hope this will help.

Check for a carbon track in the distributor cap and or the rotor, if those are ok check the coil wire, if thats ok, whet stone the point contacts. Make sure the primary distributor wire is ok also. Occasionally the coil tower will carbon track. Condersers seldom go bad, occasionally they do like most everything else. Points and condenser should be replaced regularly, even sitting a lot the points will sometimes corrode enough to not make good contact. Have fun.

Dirttracker,I was thinking about this timing thing. We have the chisel mark and the punch mark lined up perfectly,could we be out a cycle, that is should #1 be TDC when we line up the marks,that is compression stroke up and ready to fire.. or will the cam be right based on the timing marks regardless? Hi Mike. If the crankshaft and camshaft timing marks are aligned properly you are ok as far as cam timing, however you can be 180 degrees out of time with the distributor. You can check it by removing the spark plug and turning the engine (clockwise as you look at it from the front) until #1 cylinder comes up on compression, continue until the piston reaches top dead center, (timing marks should align on flywheel if the flywheel is on properly). rocker arms on #1 cylinder will be loose, now #1 plugwire , rotor and cap should should be aligning and points just opening. If rotor is aligned with a different wire you can move the wires or turn distributor shaft until everything aligns. My 4 star flywheel was installed by someone 180 degrees off where it should have been so I had to use #4 cylinder to time mine, but last winter I rebuilt to torque amplifier and while the tractor was split I checked the clutch and moved the flywheel back where it as intened. These are excellent little tractors, I use mine all the time for baling, mowing, raking and whatever. Good luck.
