I have A GVI on which I am trying to reassemble the rear end. The IT manual that I have says to tighten the nut on the pinion shaft for a "rolling torque" of 110 to 115 in/lbs for shaft bearings. How is this checked? Any advice on how to set the bearings would be appreciated. Also what is the procedure for determining and setting clearances for differential carrier bearings? Thank You for any advice.

Sorry my follow up is a little late.
Hope you did not do what these guys are saying. Remember that your spec is in inch pounds not foot pounds(12 inch pounds per foot pound)
Best practice might be to use a beam type inch pound torque wrench fixed to center of shaft. I do not know what your tranny looks like so I cant offer any advice on that attatchment of torque wrench to shaft. Anyway, rotate shaft with wrench ignoring initial spike on torque wrench(overcomes static friction) This should get you fixed up

Jeff rolling torque means the amount of pressure it takes to keep shaft turning not how much it takes to start turning. The big gear on front of shaft is about 8 inches in diameter or 4 inches in radius. 4 inches into 110 lb is about 25 to 30 lbs. Get a cord long enought to wrap around the big gear 4 or 5 times and a fish scale. Tie cord to gear and wrap around gear, hook fish scale on other end of cord, and it should take about 25 to 30 lbs to keep shaft turning.

You tighten the nut then attach a spring scale to the pinion shaft and pull till it begins to turn. Tighten the nut till it takes 110 pounds of pull to turn the shaft. Hope you understand.
