Jon, First, I want to second what M-M G-705 said about Brian Rukes book, absolutely the finest book ever written about M-M. Wish I had it when I started collecting, I had to learn everything the hard way. I've read every word of the book and it is great. Why not order it from him direct? He will sign it for you and I think he makes a couple more bucks off it, too; he's only 22 and could use it, I'm sure. I'd like to clarify a little of what G-705 said - he was including the UTIL's too, I believe. UTI's are about a third as numerous as the UTIL's. Also, there is a breakdown of the U's from the beginning of production till mid-48, as far as type of tractor. This is available at the Minnesota State Historical Archives, who got whatever material M-M decided to give them. Why this breakdown has never been published I don't know. Numerous people have it, but no one wants to make it public I guess. As far as differences in the UTI/UTIL, as you said, it has a heavier wide front, and has different wheels that usually have truck tires mounted. It has a foot clutch instead of hand, and has different rear axle housings and axles, and different wheels, which often had road grader tires mounted. Hope this helps. Jim
