Have rebuilt the engine from top to bottom and
replaced the oil pressure gauge with a new one
from Car Quest. The pressure wavers from 22 to 30 p.s.i. and does this at any r.p.m.. The oil seems to be
getting evrywhere it's supposed to go. My next step is to drop the pan and check the
oil pump but I would like some other opinions
first.
Thanks. Bob in Ont.

Thanks guys but no luck yet. I'm going to drop the pan as soon as I can get some help
rounded up.
The way it acts makes me think that the key in
the driving gear in pump is sheared off and is
draging and hence the up and down pressure.
I had the pump dismantled before I installed it
and it was in excellent condition.
After 40+ years around tractors and trucks I've
learned that anything can happen at anytime.
I will post the findings when the job is finished.

Bob,
I don't know for sure about the UTS Special, but I do know that on the R and Z series behind the pressure adjusting screw there is a spring and plunger. Id the passage way that the plunger rides in becomes filled with sludge or the spring gets weak the oil pressure will fluctuate as you indicate. I know because I had an R wiht a completely rebuilt motor etc....And I had oil pressure swings from 10 to 50. After completely cleaning this area and installing several different springs I was able to stabilize the pressure. You might try installing a stiffer spring before dropping the pan.

This morning I went out to the shop and took
the pressure regulator off and dismantled it for
the umpteenth time. Put a different spring in
(actually one from an older U) and when I started the engine the pressure was steady for
about 30 seconds and then started wavering
again.
I began to tighten down the pressure regulator
screw and it smoothed out by the time I got it
up to about 40 p.s.i.
Had the engine running at different speeds for
an hour or so and the pressure is about 18 lb at
idle to 40 lb wide open. I think I can live with
that.
Wether this is a permanent cure or not it sure
beats dropping that heavy pan.
Thanks guys for taking the time to respond.

In addition to the pressure regulating screw you might check the seals around the cannister that holds oil
filter. Am assuming the UTS special has oil filter in oil pan like the UB Special

Bob, have you checked the oil pressure adjustment
screw? Older U's had setscrew on bottom of oil
filter housing to regulate oil pressure. I think
your UTS special should have only a plate on the left side of the engine with this setscrew in it.
