Might take on a project for a local park on a MMR that has a knock in the engine. Don't know how bad as have not heard it yet. I know absolutely nothing about MMs but have worked on JD and International oldies in the past. what is the difference between an R and RT? This is a tricycle type if that is it. It is I believe from SN range a 1945 and would appear to have a magneto instead of distributor, though it has a battery and starter.Looks like you might have to go through the left side to get to the rod bearings is that true? need to find an IT manual or something on it I guess. Thanks for any help

take a 7/16, 1/2, and a 9/16 wrench and have at it. There is no noticable if any difference between an R and RT. Yes you do have to go through the left side to get to the rods. If it is a rod bearing all youy need to do is take that side plate off, find the bad bearing, and change it as they are all accessible throught this opening.. Thanks Joe, I'm sure I will need more help as time goes on. As I said have not listened to it yet just was told there was a knock in the engine. A guy here who restored a RWI(think that was it) said a lot of them knock in the front from the front main bearing which is apparently a roller bearing. Have you had experience with those? He siad to get at it you have to pull the engine and take the crankshaft out the back. As I say have never touched anything this color before.(well maybe in a baby diaper)

Dan,
Your friend is correct. The front roller bearing can only be replaced by removing the crankshaft from the rear of the engine. These front roller bearings usually went bad when the tractor sat and rust built up on the bearing races. The good news is that these roller bearings are still available from any ball bearing supplier. I believe Bower was the original bearing manufacturer and still makes the exact replacement bearing. The R crankshaft is supported only by the front roller bearing and a rear shell/thrust bearing.
