Does anyone have the specs for valves on a 1950 ZAU with the 206 4cly. engine? I can have them made for me if I can get the info.

I am overhauling my old ZTU. The machine shop called today to ask me if I had, or knew where to get one new valve. I told them to try small block chevy valves, they were about the same size. I called the machine shop back late in the day and he told me that he had installed a chevy valve and it was a near perfect fit. The stem was about 0.030" shorter. C. Shepherd

Joe has a good idea. You can find regular valves (intake & exhuast) for $11 & $18 at NAPA or you can get the chevy ones for $4 and when you buy a whole set you can save big bucks. Can also get valve guides from NAPA too if you need them.

Are you saying to get intake for intake, and exhaust for exhaust? They are a straight match? How do I ask for the guides you mention, under Chevy or MM? We're talking small block Chevy V-8, right?

The valve guides that I got were ordered for the MM 165/185/206 engine size based on my local NAPA dealers catalog. When I picked them up, I also asked them to grab a chevy small block valve to see how it fit into the guides. It slipped thru with ease and no slack. It was beautiful. It was the first time anything Chevy became useful to me. I am not a mechanic, but apparently there are different head sizes that you will need to match up to your valve seats.

Jim,

The way my machinist/valve guy explained it ot me when we figured this out was: I had a set of blocks for my ZB in having the valves done. Mr X had a set of heads for a small block Chevy v-8 in for a valve job. They were on the bench side by side and he just happened to notice that the valves looked very similar.....SOOOOO OOOOO he grabbed a set of mics and started measuring. We were having some trouble finding original valves at the time so he thought it might be a solution to the problem. Turns out that the Chevy valves are just a few thousandths bigger on the stem with one extra retainer groove. This works out fine , because the guides were slightly worn as well, so the extra stemn diameter brought the clearance back in. YEAH. I think it was a set of heads from a 400, but I'm not sure. And chevy makes a lot of different sized heads. So take one each of the old ones and have them matched to chevy or napa or whatever brand of aftermarket auto valve you want. Your wallet will thank you

Thanks Joe, I figured there must be several different sizes of valves for all the head configurations Chevy had over the years; I'll just go have them match them up. If the stem diameter is a little big one can always have the MM guides reamed out, or like you said they may be worn enough to work.

Go with small blaock chevy valves. Much cheaper than having them custom made. I'm not sure of the exact sizes, but if you take the old ones to a good machine shop they should be able to determine what you need. i have done this with 3 engines and they work great.

Don't tell everyone. I am hoping that once they are used to the chevy valves they won't notice when I put the whole motor in it.
