i have a 1949 uti. how rare are these tractors?

Not rare. Prior to mid 1948 MM did not seperate the UTI from the other UT models from a serial # perspective so hard to tell just how many made up thru mid 1948. Starting in late 1948 MM gave UTI's their own serial number system. After that according to the MM Buyers Guide, there was around 1700 made. Some models like the UTID had only 6 models made from 1954-55. There is also a UTIL version that had shuttle clutch as the "L" may denote a loader version where shuttle-shift clutch would be a real plus. There is more info. Suggest you get a copy of the Illustrated Buyers Guide for MM tractors from Motor Books or use this address to get one right from the author (Brian Rukes) and I think he will even sign it. Good luck
