I have a 1943 UTU with the 283 4cyl engine with a 4 1/4 X 5 bore & stroke. My manual does not specify the HP of this tractor.

I have added hydraulics, and wish to use it with a mower conditioner this summer. Local sources indicate I need 30-35 HP for a 7 foot mower conditioner, and 40-45 HP for a 9 footer. I'm trying to determine the HP before I buy the moco.

Thanks!

A stock U should put out around 45~50 PTO horsepower. You should have enough to turn the bigger conditioner. It all depends on how fast you want to drive.

A U has plenty of HP to run a 9 foot mower conditioner under average conditions. Might have to drop 1 gear in very heavy cutting or on steep land. Does your U have live PTO? It is very hard to mow without live PTO because you must sometimes stop and back up with the mower running to clear the cutterbar or rolls in heavy cutting.
