My grandad has a G1000 that is using oil pretty badly and needs an overhaul. He had a guy do a complete valve job on it a couple years ago, but it's going to need rings and maybe more to get the problem fixed. Does anyone know a good M&M mechanic in NW Oklahoma that could do this reasonably?? Or should we just make a go of it ourselves?

Howard,

Thanks for the information....I see your point with what do you consider NW Oklahoma...

Actually I consider Guymon as the panhandle of Oklahoma...

Any way my grandad"s farm is 20W of Fairview. I actually live in what is generally considered west Texas, out west of Lubbock.

I"ll pass the info from everyone along to my grandad, I hope he gets that tractor overhauled soon. I love to drive that one when I visit up there.

I meant to ask - where do you call NW Oklahoma?

Some people think Woodward is - we farm 50 miles west of Guymon... I get over to Laverne fairly often for work for a client.

I should have also mentioned Allen's in Guymon - they took over the old Moline shop from years ago and still overhaul a lot of them. Haven't used them personally, but they've got a good reputation as far as I've heard.

Also, you might be able to find an old irrigation motor with good blocks to save you some machine work costs - if yours are completely worn out.

Like JT said, it's just nuts and bolts! Minnie engines are pretty simple...

The one thing I'd say, is make sure your machinist knows what he's doing. I had a set of HD800 blocks bored one time for bigger pistons - put the motor back together myself and fired it up on a well...

Ran great for 5-6 minutes actually working (after I'd let it warm up good), but then pulled down and stopped with a big squeak!! Locked down tight. Tried it again a few hours later - it was free! And started like a new overhaul! But then pulled down and stopped just like before.

Long story short - the machinist had sized the bores ever so slightly too small and the pistons would get too tight when really hot and lock her down.

Complaining to the local MM guru who knew them as well as the factory guys could have known them - and he just said, "yeah - I only take my machine work to one guy - and he knows exactly what I expect - and I never have to worry if it's right or not...".

Apparently, he sized them just a thousandth or two (or some amount - I'm not sure) extra large...

Find a shop manual and go at it.I'll pass on some sound advise once given to me when I bought a dozer."Don't be a fraid to work on it.It's only nuts and bolts".
