got my it book today didnt tell me what i wanted to know. how is a zau different from za tractor is 1949. does it have continuous power take off? does have disk brakes? i have a line from top of hydrolic tank that is not hooked up, disconnected at block. there is no control lever for hydrolic system. any pictures would help. thank to every one.

I have a 1952 ZAU bought new by my great uncle. It has the field conversion live PTO add on and hydraulics, which gives it a drum brake on the right side and a disk brake on the left. You need the Uni-Matic power lift book for the hydraulics. You should have a pump on the left side of the engine bolted to the big ear sticking out from the front cover. The solid metal pipe is the hydraulic suction line and is bolted to the pump and connected to the reservoir by a short rubber hose. The high pressure side has a 1/2" hydraulic hose. I got a copy of the Uni-Matic hydraulic parts and operators manual from a kind user of this forum who had a copy machine handy. I just got mine running today for the first time since 1962 when he died. If you need pictures e-mail me or put up a post here and I'll see what I can do. I also have a 1947? ZTU in the barn which was also his and has sat idle for the last 15 years.

a ZAU:
ZA is the basic model. ZT was the first in the series. (T may have stood for tractor)

The last digit designates axle configuration.

U means the tractor had a 2 wheel narrow front.

If it had a single front wheel, it would be a ZAN. if adjustable wide front, ZAE, If fixed standard tread, ZAS.

So a ZA parts book will have parts for the ZAU, ZAN, ZAE and ZAS.
