ZAU hydraulics trouble.

Have a few questions about hydraulics on ZAU.

Oil just goes away. Doesn't seem to disappear faster if running than if stored for winter. Just slowly goes into the crank case. My guess is hydraulic pump seal someplace. I'm sure someone else has experienced this. Suggestions?

Hydraulics used to work just fine. Now for some reason when I fill unit back up & cycle remote cyl a few times to work out the air, it raises and lowers just fine. It won't hold though. Example, raises the cutter bar of the mower just fine but as soon as the valve cancels (cyl at end of stroke) then the cutter bar falls slowly back to the ground. It is not the cyl. 'cause it holds just fine on another tractor. Don't have a book for the hydraulics. Any suggestions here?

Another possibility is that the screen filter is bad in your resivor. when this goes bad it pushes oil out of the breather line and into the crankcase. Before you take your pump apart, take the breather line loose of the engine and cycle the ram. If oil comes out the end your screen filter is bad.

Had a similar problem a few years ago. Take the pump apart and replace the o-rings in there. Should solve the problem. Someone once told me that originally there was a spring in there, too, but it wasn't needed. I never saw it, but other guys claimed the spring was the key to preventing leaks. I don't have a spring or leaks in mine.

Is the other tractor you are trying this cylinder on a Minneapolis Moline? If not, your cylinder may also be part of the problem. On MM Hydraulic systems, the check valves are in the cylinder, not the control valve like other systems. If your cylinder will not hold, your check valves may be leaking

Now there's a 64K question. Been using a Minnie Cylinder on the Z and old mower. Bought another mower that already had a cylinder on it. The new cylinder is an Oliver with the electric controls. It would lift but not stay up. Thinking the cyl might be bad, I hooked it up to one of my JD A's. Works fine. I've tried tractors from A to Z you might say! Sorry.... couldn't resist that. Your mention that some of the Minnie valving takes place in the remote cylinder made the light bulb light up. That would explain why it's often mentioned that "you will have to get a Minnie cylinder" doesn't it? Will try the Minnie Cyl on the new mower & let you know!

Thanks a lot for the advice!

one of our UTUs that is a parts tractor (was the good one, but..long story)...
anyway, before my time, my dad put a check valve assy on it so it could be used with other hyd cylinders.
i'm sure these are still available. all you need is the valve assy, and some extra hose or pipe.
