Propane help?

I have a tractor that I put a 605 engine in. The tractor acts like its running on 4 cylinders all of the time. Ive checked all the valves, the engine is timed correctly, replaced the distributor cap, spark plug wires, coil, points and condensor. The tractor has been completley rewired front to back. I put an 800 intake Impco 200d carb and impco model E regulator on it. The tractor runs rough and misses all the time. The only time it seems to run well is when I put it in road gear going up a hill, idle it back to where its about to stall then pull the throttle down and it runs great until the load is off the engine. This leads me to believe its a fuel problem. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Captain has a good point. If it runs good under load, it can't really be a fuel quantity delivery problem. Under no load, vacuum is high and vacuum leaks have a dramatic effect on smooth running. The fact that your adjustments are having little effect is also indicative of vacuum leak. In addition to the usual leak suspects, I wonder about the potential of a cracked head or an intake valve(s) not seating properly. Keep us posted on what you find.

Hate to admit it but I just made a stupid mistake. We put the tractor style breathers on the rocker covers. Power unit breather tube runs into the bottom of the intake manifold. Hole was not plugged in bottom of intake manifold and was just sucking air. Thanks for the help though. We even sprayed around the intake manifold to check for vaccum leaks and we just never saw the hole. Have to just laugh about spending a week on such a little oversight.

There are no stupid mistakes and I'm thrilled to hear that you got to the bottom of it as quickly as you did. I have a 706 Farmall that I had the same trouble with. By the time it was over I wished that the carburetor was held on with Velcro, I had it on and off so many times.

The last time the heads were replaced they were not aligned. The intake manifold cannot seal and that makes it to lean to run at low loads.
Take manifolds off and check the three surfaces with a long straight edge. If it is not straight you will have to loosen heads and align.

I've got a 800 HD with, what I think is, the same carburator. On mine, there is a main fuel adjustment that is right where the fuel is drawn in and has R(Rich) and L (Lean) index marks. Have you attempted any adjustment of that? Also, do you think that the Vaporizer is rated for that size engine? I have some books at my office and I may be able to further help on Monday when me and my books are together. My 800 is in front of a generator and I, too am having fuel delivery issues (Natural gas). I'm having the gas line and regulators moved around to overcome the problem, initial installation was done wrong according to my generator man.

I have adjusted both the air and fuel adjustments on the carb and it seems to make very little difference in the way it runs. I also removed the intake thinking maybe the manifold wasnt sealing against the heads and that also made no difference.

Have you checked the diaphams and springs in the carb? The regulator could also be sticking feeding to much pressure.
