I have a 1966 670 super gasoline, I started having this problem last fall while plowing. while plowing under full load it will start missing like it was running out of fuel. I thought I might have something in my fuel tank so I took it off and had it boiled out at a radiator shop. I then had the tank lined and rebuilt the carberator. I also instaled a stand pipe in the bottom of the tank, It still did not help. I then thought it might be a firing problem so I replaced the points, plugs, wires, coil and condenser. Still no change. Last night I instaled a electric fuel pump thinking mayby it was vapor locking but that did not fix the problem. I also adjusted the valves thinking maby they were to tight but they were fine. I am at wits end and really dont know what else to try. I thought maby someone else had run into this and had a suggestion on anything else to try. Any info would be great. Thanks Chris S.

This sort of sounds like a problem I had with my 335. It would start good and gradually sound like it was running out of gas. I tried lots of things and I finally replaced the condenser.

Your fuel problem sounds very familer.I have a 68 M-670 Super, that i pull.It would start out good, then it would start to spudder and miss.I would have to pull to choke in and out to keep it running and it would finally run out of fuel.I tryed everything to fix it.Finally i bought an electric fuel pump and regulater and finally it will not run out of power now.All of this happened after i got the carb. rebuilt. If you dont have a metal fuel line put one of those on and they say not to go over 2-3 psi of gas on an up drift carb.I hope i helped you out.

Did you check the fuel cap? It may be pluged.

Since you changed out all the ignition parts, sounds like a fuel problem.

Did you change the screen in the filter bowl? Sometimes they coat with varnish and look o.k. but only a little fuel will flow through. You should have about a pencil size stream where the fuel line connects to the carburetor, not just a dribble, if you want to check it there. Let it run a bit into a container to make sure the flow doesn't drop off.

Did you replace the fuel line? Sometimes the inner wall of rubber fuel line will collapse. Had this happen on a puller once.

Chris, are you from Kentucky, and if so, did you build and sell a Z puller to a man in Hopkinsville?

Thanks for all the info. I will keep tinkering with this until I figure it out. Its probely something simple that I am over looking but it starts getting frustrating after awhile. To answer Family Traditions question yes I am from Ky and I did build the Z pulling in the Western part of the state. They done away with the 4500 LB classes locally so we sold it.

Chris,

I see you replaced most of the ignition parts but did you replace the coil? I have had a coil go bad on me before and it drove me crazy until I replaced it. It had the same characteristics of the tractor starving for fuel.

Yes,I checked the manifold gasket. I sprayed starting fluid around it with the tractor running and it didnt affect it. I am going to take the carberator back apart and make sure the flote isnt dragging on the side of the bowl. I thought I checked that before but I might have missed something. Thanks Chris

Distributor problem? We did have a 770 Oliver that sputtered and popped under load something terrible. We replaced the key switch and it took care of it. Had a 4020 at work with the same problem. Everything was replaced on it and no change either. I dont know why it did make a difference but we didnt have any more problems after that.
