Another M5 power steering question

Since I have had tractor, steering turns easier to the right then the left. Had hydraulic pump rebuilt at welters ($200), arms wouldn"t lift at idle (400 psi). Installed rebuilt pump, and noticed a hissing sound. Move lift arms, hiss goes away, turn wheel to right and hiss goes away. Traced hiss down to rubber hose on top of transmission going to power steering line is sucking air. Removed old dry rotted hose. Had napa make hose, haven"t put it on yet. Question is will this change/fix steering problems, or will I still need to do something with control valve? I.T. manual is not real clear. Any suggestions? Also what performance should i expect out of a 3 pt log splitter on this rig? I need to sell my 4000 ford 3 cyl, was original agreement with wife on M5 purchase. Thanks for any input.

Roger in Kansas is telling you exactly right. But that lever can wear a flat where it pivots and cause lost motion. I also have a trade secret that I do to them and all my customers say they steer better than they did when new.

IT manual for 5 Star, paragraph "22 R&R and Overhaul" on page 17 gives procedure for adjusting for hard turn one way.

Also I"ve seen on one with wide front end that spindle assembly was corroded and caused hard steering.

We converted ours over with a TRW hydra unit. Mounted everything inside with a u-joint. Custom bent new hard lines to the unit. It looks great and work better then new. This hydra unit also has the engine off steer capability. It realy has power now. Tractor has 15000 hrs on it.

Fred, what did the trw unit cost? Where can you get one? I will try and fix the factory setup first, but if that don't work, it will be time for plan b. Thanks guys

We bought a junked M5 with it on for a hundred dollars. Other will work I am sure. We also converted a 445. Not sure what my brother used on that one but will check.

My father bought an M 5 new in 1962. We have 24,000 hours on it. At one time we were running it 24 hours a day. I now own Six M 5�s a 602 and a 604. Not sure of all the correct terms but will describe it as best I can. At the front of the tractor on the Left side there is a steering box with 4 steel hydraulic lines going into it. On the front of this steering box is a spade. This is supposed to have 40,000 of an inch clearance to activate the power steering to the left or right. If the spade is worn and has too much clearance it will steer good one way but not the other. If everything else checks out Ok then this is the problem. There are 4 allen head bolts that hold the steering box in place. Loosen them and slide the box one way or the other. It won�t slide very much. If this changes the direction that steers easier from one to the other then you know the spade is worn out and has too much clearance. It took us awhile to discover this on our first M5. If you have a wire welder you can run a bead down one side of the spade and grind it down to fit in the slot. I have done this to 4 of the 8 tractors that we have with this type of power steering. This is not always the problem but it is the toughest one to figure out.
