I've posted on the MF board but not received a response. My tractor is leaking (seriously leaking) from the rear main. I know I'm going to need to split to make the repair. I'd like to have a seal in hand when I do it so I don't tie up my friends shop for too long. Does anyone have the seal number so I can order one? My tractor is actually an MF 97 with the Moline Diesel-not sure they came any other way.

Yes ALLAN they are a rope type seal ,but an atogether different type composition. Also the side seals are not cork anymore. They are made of a material that you soak in deisel fuel and install and then they swell up.
You can get these parts from Wilbert Kerchner @ 815+539-6965 after 5:30 or Welters @ 417+498-6496

Thanks! While it may be difficult to put in the packing, splitting this thing would be tough since it's so big. I do have an IT manual but had trouble figuring this thing out. So do you all think that the parts are available through AGCO?

They were when I bought them six years ago, but who knows now. The AGCO source I usually frequented was an old Oliver dealer. The owner was in his 80's and two years ago closed it up, nobody would buy the place. The nearest AGCO outlet is now an old A/C-Gleaner dealer, and from what I heard Oliver and MM are considered step-children at best. Until about five years ago an old MM dealer was still in business supporting only MM equipment with a AGCO parts contract. If necessary you could go there although it was more than 120 miles round trip. It was a great place for both new and NOS parts. He also had a complete machine and rebuild shop. Alas, the man retired and it is also gone. Perhaps using an MM tractor in a production farming enviroment for more than occasional/infrequent use, is rapidly becoming impractical because of poor/non-existant dealer support/parts.

I believe the part number that will get you there is a 10A26250 and it says you need two, however I vaguely remember that two came in the last package that was purchased.. This part number may have been updated to a new number. You also will need two 10A27716 cork gaskets which go on each side of the seal retaing bracket. This might also have a new part number. Also need a new pan gasket which might be a 20-0000228 or a 10A9019. Call an AGCO dealer with these numbers and see how they check out. I still wouldn't plan on replacing the seal without the tool. Basically it is a spring steel metal strip with a long slot cut in one side for inserting the seal. I've heard it can be made without too much difficulty, just would be a good idea to have the proper dimensions.

Like it was stated it is a "rope" seal or packing. I changed one and it was very difficult. You need a tool to install the upper half. An older, knowledgable MM guy said to just squash/pack the current upper half and then cut the new lower half long so it will squeeze into the voids in the upper half you created during the packing process. I used this method on a GVI parade/display tractor and it did a pretty good job. I still have the new half seal. It is a lot easier to replace the upper half if you drop the crankshaft a little. The seals should be the same for all the big block engines.

You don't have to split. Get yourself an MM IT shop manual $35.00. I don't have time or space to explain it all correctly.

DEL Do they have a rope type seal in them? That is what it looks like in the parts book.
