I can't get this thing running right. I had 2 replace the head, cracked. Had heads redone, new points, plugs, and rebuilt to carb, Still running just as bad as when I started this project, Timing???? I don't know much about these things, trying to learn as I go. Any help or something to look for would really help.

1. Compression pressure of at least 80 psi?
2. Ignition timing? a few degrees BTDC
3. Check condition of Spark plug wires? F.O. 1342 are the wires connected to the right plugs?
4. Is the Intake gaskets leaking?
5. Model U known to burn exhaust manifold heat thru to intake manifold. Engine then is running on exhaust gasses. They start well and then imediately run poorly as exhaust is drawn into the intake.

I would start by pulling No. ! spark plug out and check for when it blows air out the spark plug hole, it is coming up on compression. Might try sticking a wire down in the spark plug hole and when it stops coming back out it is at the top. There should be a mark DO 1-4 somewhere on the edge of the flywheel that will be visable under a plate or timing window. Also the firing order is 1-3-4-2. Also make sure you are counting the same direction the rotor turns.

1st thing I'd do is spray carb cleaner around the intake gasket areas, it could have a huge intake leak. If the carb cleaner makes it rev up, there's the problem.

Check the gear on the bottom of the distributor. They can become very worn and cause the timing to jump.

What is it doing? Is it skipping? surging? backfiring?

It has a horrible miss. No power to even drive it. Idle it is missing bad, As soon as you give it any throttle it almost dies it misses so bad. What is the best way to check the timing, If I pull distr. out and start from scratch. With would be #1. Is there a good way to find top dead center?? I can't find any marking on the flywheel. Thanks for any help.
