I friend just called and told me about his latest MM problem. He has a UB special (gas). Last year he tore the engine apart to get it un- stuck, reassembled it and used it around the farm. It developed a rear seal leak so he started taking it apart. He found no oil in the oil filter compartment, filter is still good as new. he had oil presure. Something is blocking the flow of oil to the filter, could he have put something on the wrong way?

I had the same problem. There's an orifice at about the 1 o'clock position on the oil pan under the round cover that covers the oil filter. It's likely the orifice is plugged. For fun, and to prove it, install the filter can in the oil pan. With the cover absent and oil in the crankcase start the engine. You'll likely see that there is no oil going anywhere. With a small wire, do some poking through that orefice and then you'll hopefully be sprayed with oil. I had to drill mine out just a fuzz to allow the stuff blocking the orifice to get out. That's the only way the oil has of entering the filter. Now if anybody claims that the oil is filtered before it hits the bearings, we know better. This is strictly a by-pass system.
