when i took my distribuitor appart the mechanical advance is kinda floppy.you can push it out with your fingers.. the springs look good but shouldnt they hold it tight to the center when not running... could this be part of the problem of skiping and then catching back up when the throttle is opened quickly or when i let out on the clutch and it almost dies and then catches back up but pulls hard when it does.. timing is set ,new points,plugs wires and coil a couple weeks ago.. thanks matt

The distributor can affect alot. I remember when I was working at a shop and a guy came in with a U that didnt run right. It was sloppy bushings in the distributor, but all things stated affect it also, just have to keep looking...
At the same shop we also had a 4020 gas that didnt run right. It would pop often when it was running and didnt have any power. It had been to a Case IH dealer, they couldnt figure it out. They had replaced the usual...plugs wires points. My boss had replaced dist. cap tried a different coil and distributor. I told him it might be the key switch...he looked at me funny. We had an Oliver 770 that had the same problem, thats how I knew...that was the problem. An old gentleman told me once, experience is better than knowledge...how right he was.

take the carb to motec engeering near tipton ind He is really good and a m-m fan. He test eachcarb with dyno after rebuild,

i also tryed the carb from an allis d19 as they were almost identical except throtle linkage and it ran the same on 670 but perfect on my d19.. didnt try the 670 carb on the 19..

i cleaned the carb a few months ago with no results. took it to a local carb shop( who admited he didnt know alot about updraft carbs). cleaned-rebuilt. no fix.i know of a local man who used to work for and runs all m-m . maby i should see if he wants to take a crack at it.. it dosent lope at idle it just plain sounds like the timing is off and misses out. if it was the carb it makes since( slight floding) as when you pull it hard it runs perfect.. thanks

I know you said it had new points, plugs, wires and coil. It still sounds like you have weak spark at the plugs.

I would try a known good coil. Make sure that the + on the coil is on the wire from the switch, not the wire to the distribuitor. (Even though the tractor is a + ground if it had a generator.) Wiring it backwards adds the primary resistance of the coil into the path between the points and the high tension wire which cuts the voltage in the high tension wire.

You might try the coil from your D19. Also, is there a resistor in circuit from the switch? Some replacement coils have the resistance built in and do not need another resistor.

Another thing to try is a known-to-be good condenser, on the odd chance it is not doing its job, or is not grounded.

Clean the carburetor, or have someone that know how clean the carburetor.

I had a 335 that ran like that. I did the distributor just like you, but sold it before cleaning the carb.

Does the 670 "lope" at low RPMS as well?

The guy, who is on this board, got the tractor - and cleaned the carb. He said it runs smooth now.
