Am I an idiot, what does "NOS" stand for when people are selling stuff on Ebay? Someone told me "New Old Stock." If it does stand for new old stock, people are selling old crap and labeling it "NOS". Please educate me!

ive seen people put NOS on parts that are used like a connecting rod. There are people out there trying to make a couple extra bucks by putting NOS on a used part thats cleaned and looks new. to me if it says "NOS" or "NEW" or "LOOK AT" or "MM!" means the seller is just interested in the money. Money is just paper and metal that says "Federal Reserve Note." It represents a percent of what the US is worth. 25 cents back when I was a kid was a lot of money. and for $1500 you could have bought a new tractor. now you spend that much for a worn out one that needs twice as much in parts at times.

New old stock (NOS) is about as thrown around as "low original hours" anymore. It used to mean something, now its basically a label most ignore.

Thanks to everyone! Good stuff to know, and I hope I didn't get to many hopes up by making you think that the "NOS" I was refering to meant I had tractor running Nitrous Oxidie. Maybe propane to the Duramax in the future...

It is suppose to mean NEW OLD STOCK. Now that dosen't mean that the part can't be old or dirty. The part has never been put into service. I purchased a seal not too long ago and it had rust on it. But the seal has never been used and the leather looked new. Although there are better seals on the market and I paid three times more for mine.The one I got is original.

Thanks Fordguy, I figured that new old stock was accurate, but some dirty, old, obviously used parts are being sold with "NOS" in the description. If they only knew....

NOS does mean new old stock. A NOS part is a part that has never been used but was produced a long time ago. When a lot of Moline dealers shut down the parts never got sold or were hoarded somewhere, today those parts would be NOS.

When it comes to New Old Stock (NOS) it is important to consider the concept of "Shelf Wear". While an item sits, unused, it MAY be deteriorating. Was the part in a air-conditioned/heated building or was it in an old shed, sitting on a shelf in a high-humidity environment.

Also, the part may be getting moved around and getting beat up in it's box/container.

NOS is term that doesn't indicate a pristine part, just that the part hasn't been put into service.
