The transmission shift lever goes in the side of the transmission cover and into a hole in the other side of the transmission cover. There is a sleeve that goes into the hole first to support the lever. Where would I find a new sleeve?

Thanks, Dan

I also have a parts manual for a Z universal and standard. On page 49 it list "Expansion Plug over End of Clutch Shaft." Qty. 1 ---Code Word JLEYZ -- Part Number JT183. I don't know if my Z has one or not as I have not gotten that far in the restoration on my tractor...deadeye

Dan, My ZTU is a 1940 model and I do not have a sleeve in mine. It sounds like a good idea to put a sleeve or a bushing in to take up the play in the level. I am all for using modern "touches" to make items "last longer and/or more functionally sound" if the orginal appearance isn"t compromised too much for a restoration project. If the tractor is still being used, do what you need to do to make them work.

There is, however, a canvas cover that looks like a funnel that goes over the end of the lip of the transmission cover and then over the shaft of the level itself. I am assuming this is to keep the dirt and grime out of it. I can see where the canvas would get very dirty and saturated by water, dirt, and grease. It might be a nice touch for a restoration project, but maybe not for a tractor that is being used.

Are you sure there is a sleeve in your transmission cover? My tractor is a 46 ZTN. I am presently working on my transmition cover as well. Unless I am mistaken, there is no sleeve in mine. The shift lever slides right into the cast holes. My parts manual which covers Z's up to 1948 does not show a sleeve. Jerry

Possibly a previous owner put a bushing in there to take up wear.

Well, the parts book would tell if a sleeve in there is a factory item for sure. My '38 ZTU doesn't have one although there is a lot of wear there and it could use one.
