Replacing the brakes/seals on a M5. How can I tell that the brakes are worn. I know that the seals are shot because there is oil leaking out. How thick are new discs?? Mine are only about 1/2 in thick and smooth on both sides. Is there any where to buy new disc?? THANKS!!!

In my opion if you have oil leaking out of the seals there you might as well replace the disc"s no matter what the wear is. Because the old ones will be oil soaked and since you all ready have it torn down anyway. Yes you can clean them up some with brake clean. How deep is the wear grooves on the discs? If they are completely smooth than it was time to change them any way. Those can still be bought at any Agco dealer.

Just want to add that some of those disks never had grooves in them. Just two friction disks bonded to the center plate.

Like Kevin said, If its been leaking you probably should replace the disks. If you go for cheap, at least change the inboard ones. They are much more likely to get oil on them. And clean up everything else. If the actuator assembly is dusty or rusty you may have to take it apart and clean up the balls and ramps.

There is also a drain hole-At least there is one on the Jetstars-that leads down from the seal to the bottom of the case. It needs to be open.
