I was at the Hopkins plant in the early '70s applying for a job in the research and develpoment department. While there I of course got a tour and saw a complete prototype engine for MM-White. It was a small four cylinder monoblcock (no separate cylinder blocks) engine with a very unique layout. The accessory drive gears were mounted at the back of the engine; this lessens the twisting forces in the crank under load because the cam, fuel pump, hydraulic pump and alternator were driven from the back of the crank. It was a sweet looking engine and probably would have been a boost to the tractor line. I would like to know if anyone out there has any idea of where this engine is and if it is for sale. Please ask around as it really got my attention.

I once talked to a MM engineer at the Hopkins plant. The new White tractors were to have cantilever engines in the frame so no stresses could be put on the engine. Only mounted on the back he said. If true then mounting all the accessories on the back of the engine would keep the extra weight back at the mounting point. The plant I was told was sold to Perkins, but I have no documentation on that. Many prototypes were built. White simply ran out of money the engineer said.

The HPOCA (Hart Parr Oliver Collectors Assoc) magazine had an article on those tractors a couple months back. That engine you saw was to go into a new line of tractors for White. There were 4 and 6 cyl versions with many new innovations in engine technology. There were several running tractor prototypes produced but the company pulled the plug on the project. Very interesting what could have been. Who knows where White would be today if they would have kept investing in the future.

I have this odd feeling that it was probably scrapped. Maybe an old engineer snuck off with the blueprints for it?
