My Dad bought a new M-M baler in the spring of 1948. We used it for 10 to 12 years. Really a good baler. It had a 4 cylinders Wiscoun air cooled motor on. I"m wondering -- would there be any of these old balers still operational today ?

I saw this one baling straw at the MM show in Prairie Village, SD (August 2007). I've got additional pictures if interested. I visited with the owner at length but didn't get his name. He was from that area. He had bought it at an auction for $5, pulled it out of the brush, and worked it over to fully operational. This one had the Wisconsin engine. Absolutely fascinating.

Thanks for all of the replys, Dad's baler had the spokes fly wheel. We did custom baleing and charged 12 cents a bale in 1948, but went to 14 cents in 1952. Dad retired in Jan. 1958 and I did not have the time to do custom baling after that. I sold the baler in the early 1960's. It was a good baler.

I was just interested to know if there were any of them around yet.

I picked one up about a year ago. I pull it in parades behind my MM GVI. Also displayed it in the fair. I hope to have it operational, At least running through parades by nex year.

I had four of those balers, DId custon baling My mother or sister drove tractor{MM GB} I loaded made the bales as tight as I could with out breaking wires. [wanted to give customers good value]. Furnished two hay racks Charged $.10 a bale 1950's. Any of those balers out there that need to be saved from scrap yard let me know.

Heres one that will never be operational.Its sat for over 40 years.I should get it for a conversation piece.

A MM collector in Kansas has a MM Bale-O-Matic that has never baled a single bale of hay.The dealer never sold it and just kept it.

Years ago a neighbor had one that he used some.

That one is an early one with the spoked flywheel like that. I don't remember why they redesigned it to solid.

I imagine they redesigned because everyone started the motor by standing on a flywheel spoke and using body weight to turn it over. With spokes, it was too easy to slip and get tangled up, with disastrous results. Note that the solid flywheel on the picture below had "foot holes" for starting, but if you slipped, you just fell on the ground rather than getting a "free spin" from the spoked wheel.

I have one just like it, engine runs good, haven't got it baling yet. Where is the one in the snow located? Mine has that much or more covering it right now in northwest lower Michigan. Actually, I would part with mine, if there was interest in it.
