I went to change engine oil filter on a 585 dsl. The plate on the pan has no container or filter behind it???

The oil cooler has two spin on filters.

Question is: do I need to get the container and filter for the oil pan, or are the cooler filters a later style that don't require the lower one?

Not to hijack the thread, but i am in the process of rebuilding my 504 D and can I put an external oil pump on just the same as the 585? Or is it not possible?

Schrocky - Thanks for the help. I bought this at your auction, so maybe it is the one you rebuilt??? However, I am pretty sure it does not have the external pump, just a hydraulic pump. So back to my question, is it ok to just use the oil cooler filters? John

which one did you buy ? The one with the 18.4 duals ? That is the one we worked on and I am sure it has an external pump, I am not sure about the other one but I thought they all did. I know when they were new it was a recall on some. If you are going to work that 585 at all it is worth doing it. You can find them off a 2-150 White almost quicker. We sold a unit in our parts too.My 1350 had a blown engine because it got the oil too hot.I have that puppy puttin out power now and she stays COOL.

David - No, I got the red one with 23 inch tires. I guess I'm going with replacing the spin on filters and leaving the oil pan empty, since it has run this long??? John

You have an external oil pump, that eleminates the oil pan filter.

I am not the Moline man (other side as in Green) but I thought all 585 engines had spin on filters, but the filters are not all alike. Will need to look.
