Replacement Clutch Plate for Z

I ordered a new clutch plate to replace my old one on my 46 ZTU since it was badly worn and the teeth were worn out as well so rather than repad the plate, I purchased a new one. The old one is a metal plate with teeth that engage the flywheel. The replacement part is solid composite (no metal)and comes in 3 peices. Therefore, there is nothing to keep it together when installing. Does the clutch plate stay with it's teeth always engaged to the flywheel even when the clutch is disengaged? Otherwise, the new plates would just fly out. Does some one have experence with this totally composite clutch plate? Does it really work?

I haven't ever seen that in a tractor, but it was very common in the stationary engines - 605's, 800, and HD800's - both single and double clutches.

For re-centering the clutches, we kept a "ring gear" loose and fit it up to the clutch with it disengaged... Tap it a bit to make the pads line up "good" and then snap the clutch in to hold them. Then you could mount it to the engine pretty easily...

Yes Jerry, the clutch plate teeth always engage the flywheel. I have only seen the 3 piece plate in power units but it should work fine in your ZTU. I think the 3 piece was supposed to last longer too because the material is harder than a regular lining.

What I suggest is when you are reassembling the tractor, position the 3 pieces between the driven plates and snap in the clutch. Be sure they are centered so they will slide in the inside tooth ring gear on the flywheel. You will probably need at least 3 hands to do this.

Of course, you need to watch those teeth through the hand hole to make sure it is lining up as you slide the engine to the transmission. Be sure to grease the pilot bushing in the flywheel too.
