Could anyone tell me what year or by serial number MM started using insert bearings in the U tractor engine?

Babbited bearings were used on KEA (KTA),KEC (1938-41) U ,KED (UDLX), KEF in 1942 had bearing inserts as did all later U's

acoording to my book on MM I have a 1951 UTS wih the 283A-4 engine in it, In my manual it states that different engines for that year had started to use insert bearings, I got lucky mine had the inserts, I cant remember what engines they said used the babbit ones though, so I am geussing that around 1950 or so is when they started to use insert, I will look later and post again, book is out in the shop, when i get time i will go and get it and look it up for you and post the correct answer.

for what its worth, my 1960 Federal Mogul catalog says the change in bearings came in the 1948 model year. That is for the gas engines,

I am also thinking that some (most, except a few early ones that were not updated) diesels have an even larger bearing too.

If I recall correctly, the bearings do not interchange. I'm thinking you can't even line bore the crankcase and put a late crank in an early engine.
