Have a chance at a UB and a U and there is a 403 irrigation motor on an auction. What does it take to put the 403 in a U?

Nothing much just swap the flywheel and clutch over and the top radiator hose alingment.The fan and belt arrangement may differ whether one or two belts and pulleys use the U stuff.

When I put a 403 in a '54 UTS I had some issues with getting the flywheel&ring gear/clutch/starter to all work together. I ended up with the 403 starter and flywheel with the U clutch.

Check the archives, I think 2-3 months ago someone said the UB flywheel had the correct diameter ring gear and it would bolt directly to the 403 crank and work with the 403 starter.

One other thing when putting a 403 in the U, The snout of the starter may need some clearance ground in the transmission case because it sits a bit farther from the crankshaft center than on a U 283 engine.

The 403 exhaust manifold heat riser may interfere with the hood. At least mine did.

The last thing is you may have to do some plumbing to get the temperature guage hooked up as its normal position interferes with the hood.

I had to grind the small lip out of the bell housing and the starter snout. I used the 403 fly wheel and the 283 clutch. I had to use the 283 oil filter housing for the clearince on the steering shaft. No problems with the 403 exhaust manifold on mine and I was able to use all the U plumbing and just had to turn over the water neck on the radiator. This makes a super strong tractor mine is a 1950 U rusty and ugly and have pulled up to 10,000 pound classes (no more room for weight) and always place in the top 3 and many many 1st places. It seems the heaveyer the classes the better the tractor likes it and so do I (except all the add on weights, 5400 Pounds Empty).
